Camping can be a generally affordable activity but there are certain expenses associated with the event. Travel, equipment, and permit fees can all contribute to the camping budget. In addition, people typically like to eat when they go camping, which can tend to add up if people do not plan accordingly. Here are a few thoughts on how to save money on food when camping.
Make your own
Saving money on camping food often starts with effort at home. While some people are hesitant to spend time in the kitchen, making food for the camping trip can be a great way to save costs. This can particularly apply to snacks, as buying retail munchies can quickly add up. If people do not have time or ambition to cook, it may save money to just take whatever is around the house. Rather than buying new bags and boxes of food, people should piece together items that are present in the pantry.
Pack a quality cooler
Saving money is also helped when people put together a quality cooler of food. If the cooler actually keeps things cold (some do not), people do not have to keep refilling the container with bags of ice. In addition, a chilled cooler makes it easier to store food longer, which helps people avoid buying new food on an ongoing basis.
Buy in bulk
Another way to save money on food is to buy in bulk. Warehouse stores provide many opportunities to obtain various food items at a much cheaper rate. Granted, people should judge whether or not they really need the quantities that are offered at bulk stores. Sometimes people feel like they are saving money, but they are actually spending more because they are acquiring amounts that are much larger than they need, particularly for a singular camping trip.
Skip some beverages
Finally, saving money is often about the selection of camping beverages. People do enjoy particular types of liquid refreshment when camping, especially certain adult beverages. However, these types of consumables can be fairly expensive and can be a rather large portion of the food budget. If people can tear themselves away from a few of their favorite drinks for a camping weekend, they can save a good deal of money in the camping budget.
Saving money is often about planning ahead and being aware of what people might actually eat. Too often people purchase a lot of food for a camping trip because they don't want to run out, but they end up taking a lot of it home. Reciprocally, sometimes people under pack and end up running out to camp stores and buying expensive items because they didn't plan. Therefore, saving money on camping food is about anticipation and proactive awareness of realistic camping behavior.
