Video game reviews: Alien Shooter (PC)

Many small companies that make games don't have the money to get their games publicity for the most part. In fact, most of the time they're not even sold in shops and this means their games may not catch the eye of prospective buyers and it's a shame when some of the games made by small developers are pretty innovative or they at least have decent gameplay even they do not last long or the gameplay is simplistic.

Alien Shooter is one of these games and it's the first title in a series from a developer called Sigma Team.

The story:

The game's story is weak. It is just there to provide a reason for you killing plenty of aliens and there is plenty of killing to be done when you consider how many aliens you'll be killing over the course of the game.

Basically, aliens are invading and you need to stop them by going to the area where they're teleporting in from and destroy them.

Gameplay:

Before you start playing, you're tasked with choosing your character's gender and also outfitting him or her with some very basic equipment. You can't afford much with the money you have. Once you actually start the game, you'll be faced with what seems to be a abandoned location. However, upon entering a building and flipping a switch, you find that's not the case. This is the real introduction to the game because it's what you're going to be doing for the entirety of the game and that is blasting away wave after wave of aliens. That is with the exception of the odd menu to navigate where you buy weapons etc. between levels.

So, for the most part, you exterminate a variety of aliens with an assortment of weapons. The levels will end up very messy as you paint them red (or green) with the blood of your enemies and the mess never clears until the level is complete. With that in mind, the game is not for the faint at heart. Also, there is no character levelling in this game though upgrades can be bought. Basically, the character can still be upgraded but he doesn't level so everything is bought with money.

Graphics, presentation and sound:

The graphics are okay, as is the presentation and sound. You can't expect a lot from indie developers without a lot of money.

Overall:

Provided you don't mind the repetitive and simplistic gameplay, then it's worth a look at. However, you may find that the price is perhaps a bit too steep. However, it is worth mentioning that you may want to consider getting Alien Shooter - Revisited rather than this game because the game mentioned is a remake/enhanced version. Or you could settle on the sequel.
