by Angie Pollock

Created on: July 07, 2009

Whether you want to learn about dogs or hedgehogs, there is a book written on the care and needs of these animals. Some of these non-fiction reads are written by experienced pet owners while others are penned by professionals. Recommended pet books will be dependent upon if you are researching typical pets like cats or the more exotic such as prairie dogs. The most important aspects of a pet related book should include the important topics: history of the animal, care needs, and common diseases and ailments that afflict that animal.

The Merck/Merial Manual for Pet Health

By Merck Publishing and Merial, this comprehensive book is a health resource for some of the more popular pets and animals owned. This is an extensive resource that provides in-depth information on dogs, cats, horses, birds, some reptiles, fish, and a few exotic pets. Over 200 professional veterinarians have offered their expertise in creating this book.

This book is written in layman terms and is an alternative to the official "Merck Veterinarian Manual". This is a general purpose book aimed towards pet owners that covers a hodgepodge of different pet disorders. For more in-depth details on treatments, the veterinarian manual may be more appropriate.

Herbs for Pets: The Natural Way to Enhance Your Pet's Life

Authored by Greg L. Tilford and Marl L. Wulff, "Herbs for Pets" is geared towards pet owners who are looking for natural alternatives to keep their pets healthy. The authors are both herbalists who open the book with the principles of using herbs. This guide covers herbal care for dogs, cats, horses, birds, and some reptiles. The book describes different herbal plants, uses, and side effects, among other more detailed information for pet owners looking for alternatives to conventional animal medicine.

Pet First Aid: Cats & Dogs

From the American Red Cross, "Pet First Aid: Cats & Dogs" has over 120 pages of first aid options for cats and dogs. Written by veterinarians, this book covers emergency procedures including choking, bleeding, and CPR. Non-emergency care is also covered such as bumps, scratches, and bee-stings. Step-by-step instructions with illustrations are provided for many emergencies that cat and dog owners may experience with their pets.

"The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats" is written by Amy D. Shojai and is a bit more comprehensive than the above book. This guide covers the pet emergencies
