A single parent's guide to family camping trips

If your a single parent and love camping, here is a simple guide to get you on your way. From my experience as a mom with two boys, I have some great ideas to make a camping trip fun. But first you must choose what kind of camping you want to do. Do you want to rough it or have modern conveniences. Are you a tent camper or a recreational vehicle camper, also called a motor home. Once this is decided you can choose the location or campground.

Choosing a state park is the best because they have more to offer in activities, hiking, fishing and bike riding. The camping sites are farther apart and more spacious. They have sunny and shady sites. Campers also tend to follow rules more than in other campgrounds. Most of these state parks are for both types of camping.

Bong state park in Wisconsin had everything. Fishing, hiking, nature trails, motor bike area and the beautiful sites. Also, very clean and quiet. You can reserve your site by number or take a ride and check them out yourself. If you go camping a lot, you can get a parking permit which will save you money. Tent sites were not expensive and they also offer electric ones or camper hook ups.

Packing was easy. We brought our tent, barbecue grill, fishing poles, tackle, Coleman stove, lanterns, flashlights, batteries, coolers of drinks and food. Great items to bring to cook are hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, marshmallows, prepared salad and corn on the cob. Don't forget your condiments like ketchup, mustard and salt. Whatever you bring, make sure it is easy to prepare and does not require a lot of work. For breakfast, I usually bring bacon and pancake mix that you just add water to.

For sleeping, you can purchase an air mattress for more comfort and you will need a sleeping bag and comforter. We brought along pillows, bug spray, plastic dishes and plastic ware. Pots and pans to cook in. Dish soap to clean your pans and buckets. You can get water at pumping wells in the park. If your worried about the water, bring your own. Most park water is safe for for cleaning and showering, we even drank the water at Bong. It is also a good idea to bring a radio for music and weather emergencies.

When camping you want to bring plenty of clothes in case it gets cold. Towels, body soap, shampoo and swimwear. Because the weather changes bring something to protect your tent. A tarp works well in case of rain. Bring plenty of garbage bags, a table cloth and always stop on the way to get firewood. That is the best
