Preventing spam on your WordPress blog is really quite simple; there are a number of plugins out there that are designed to do just this job, and the anti-spam plugin that I personally use first and foremost is that of Akismet.
Akismet is an absolutely brilliant WordPress plugin, and definitely does the job well in protecting your blog from spam. When you download WordPress, the Akismet plugin will come with it, and all you have to do is get it activated. You'll need a WordPress API Key to activate the plugin, and this can be simply (and freely) obtained by signing up for an account at WordPress.com. Once you've got your API Key then you can start protecting your blog from spam with Akismet, and if you've got multiple blogs that you'd like to activate the plugin on then you simply use the same API Key at each blog. Very simple, and the plugin truly does work wonders.
I found myself drowning in spam at times before I discovered Akismet, and it was a real pain having to go through and sort the proper comments out from the spam. Since I've been using Akismet the problem has well and truly disappeared though, and Akismet is a definite plugin that I'd recommend to all. It just saves so much time, and as it's completely free and incredibly simple to install; there's really no reason not be taking advantage of the Akismet plugin at your blog.
In addition to running Akismet, if you want to make absolutely sure that no spam gets through then you should also consider downloading and installing the WP-SpamFree plugin. The WP-SpamFree plugin is completely free, and can be downloaded right now from the WebGeek website. It's a quality plugin, and having this plugin installed and running alongside Akismet, you should never see any spam filtering through on your blog ever again.
There's no need to let spam through in this day and age, and with so many anti-spam plugins available; it's well worth taking advantage of the options that are out there on the market. There are plenty of free options out there to keep your blog spam free, and if you don't want to keep wasting hours ridding your blog of spam, then sorting out some sort of spam protection for your blog is definitely advised.
Use an anti-spam plugin to rid your blog of spam, and you can then spend more time concentrating on creating quality content. No one wants to be wasting their time ridding their blog of spam, and if you setup Akismet, and get the WP-SpamFree plugin setup also then you should be able to remain spam free for good.
