Poetry: Being a mother

by Robyn Hadley

Created on: July 07, 2009

You've a kind, caring and generous soul

But your opinions have become prescriptive and old

You have the heart of an angel yet you fail to see,

The truths of your children before you laid bare

God blessed parents with children to love and to hold

To continue your legacy when you grow old

What did you do to deserve God's most precious of gifts

He made you a woman blessed you with child-bearing hips

It's funny how in life we need a license to drive

Yet bringing up children pushes this requirement aside

We require nothing to prove our credentials for this role

This free gift was given from a caring, loving soul

God gave us these children to love and to uphold

Their upbringing made joyous by moments of gold

Their first special birthday, their first day of school

The fun that was had in the swimming pool

To love and to cherish these most precious gifts

To savour each moment, to encourage and uplift

You put into each little person the truth of what living's about

With each lesson and adventure they learn when they're out

Each nurtured and fed from their parent tree

Each experience so precious it makes them happy

Cherish each moment of childhood they spend

Because each of these moments if lost, is spent

Look out for your children and ensure that they're fed

Not on worldly possessions or on daily bread

But on love, support and a gentle ear

Cherish what to them is important and what they choose to hold dear

Turn not a blind eye to their frustration, their hurt or their pain

Some of these afflictions were not caused by a physical stain

The cutting sword that rips the soul and hurts from deep within

The anguish that this pain creates, just where do I begin

I speak not from empty theory, I speak to you from my heart

The anguish of feeling betrayed and hurt, tore my love apart

The pain of knowing that one who loves you just chose to look the other way

Leaves a void deep within your soul that just won't go away

The injustice that you live with just doesn't seem that fair

When normality continues all around, while you rot in your own despair

And with each day you tormentor just pushes you further to this place

Where feelings of loneliness, anger and frustration threatens to encase

Trapped in a small, tight box with no air or light

With no-one to turn too, why bother to fight

So you tolerate the unfairness, being picked on and suppressed

While life ticks on by as usual for the rest

We're all addicted to happy pills and putting on a show

If no-one talks about the life that is, then who will ever know

So I ask you, my dear loved one, just when will this ride end?

What do I need to do to make you realise, the truth and not offend

Your children are all precious and I know you love them so

Their silent plea to Mother is yours alone to know
