Camping is a great way to spend time with your family, friends or just give you a personal retreat all by yourself. In the many years I have spent camping, usually by choice and planning and on a few rare occassions, by uncontrollable circumstances, I have found that there are certain essentials that you must always keep in your car, truck or camper for the most wonderful camping experience. I have found that when camping packing lightly is the only way to go. Nothing is more miserable than having to pack and bring the entire house with you, then having the time of your life, wearing yourself out and having to pack up the whole house all over again.
No matter where or how you camp, whether it be by tent, cabin, camper, rv or under the open night sky, the following list are necessary items to have on any camping trip. For most individuals camping is merely one weekend or holiday for just a few days. For those of you camping longer, additional planning and consideration for weather, environment and meals need to be factored in.
Every camp trip should have the basics:
Garbage Sacks- to protect items from weather/dirt and to clean up your entire mess, pack enough so that you can pack all of your trash out and any trash you might come across.
Pocket Knife/Hunting Knife- This will allow you to cut strings for tent tie-ups, cut and skin branches for cooking hot dogs, marshmellows or for skinning game (including fish). Doubles as some kind of protection if needed, as well.
P-38 can opener (can put on a key chain to save space) or regular hand twist can opener.
First Aid Kit- Emergencies happen anywhere, anytime and even though it might not be you that has an emergency, you might run into another camper who does, being prepared in either event is important.
Flash Light with extra batteries/good batteries. Setting up camp in the headlights of a vehicle is hard if you arrive after dark. It's less freaky to use the bathroom in the middle of the night as well if you have something to light the path or the weather changes.
Toilet Paper and or Unscented cleaning wipes- Toilet paper helps start fires easily and nothing is worse than wiping on a pine cone or leaf that can cause some kind of reaction and just plain hurts. Wipes come in handy to wash up without having to pack all the soap, rags and buckets to wash in.
Hatchet/Axe- If you don't bring wood, use a campstove or charcoal, then you will need something to make kindling with and to chop up logs for fire
