Great tasting food and a wide selection of Canadian beer are the obvious necessities needed to host a successful Canada Day Party. But, there are a few other things one can do to ensure that your Canada Day party is memorable and that it is the party guests will want to attend again next year.
The colors of the Canadian flag are a great place to start for a theme. Deck your house out in red and white. Table cloths, napkins, cups and cutlery can all be in the colors of the Canadian flag. Decorate the house using white and red balloons and streamers. Make beautiful candle centerpieces for the tables. Take circular or square vases (large glasses could also work) and fill them alternating with red and white decorating sugar. Place a white or red candle inside and light them once the sun has set. Use red and white ribbon to tie bows to the backs of the chairs. Have small tables and chairs set up and throw some blankets on the grass for those that want a more picnic feel. Having different seating areas will allow people to mingle and socialize.
For beverages, offer a wide selection of Canadian beers and serve strawberry margaritas and pina coladas. Keep the fare simple. People aren't expecting a three course meal. A bbq is easy and enjoyable. Burgers and hot dogs on the grill and coleslaw and macaroni salad should suffice. Make vegetable (red peppers, onions, tomatoes) and fruit (strawberries, watermelon, raspberry) kabobs. Serve the fruit kabobs with a delicious vanilla yogurt and cool whip dip. Make a strawberry short cake for dessert and use strawberries to make a maple leaf on top.
A fun game that your guests can play is Don't Say. As people arrive at the party give them a white or red bracelet. Once all your guests have arrived let them know the word they can't say is EH. When a guest catches another saying EH they get to take their bracelet from them. The person with the most bracelets at the end of the party wins a prize.
If there are going to be children at the party, make sure to supply activities for them to do. Organize relay races and set up a sprinkle if the weather permits. Have a craft area with construction paper, crayons, scissors, glue and any other appropriate materials that children can use to create pictures.
To have a successful and memorable Canada Day party you do not need to break the bank. Canada Day is a day to celebrate this beautiful country we live in and a party allows us to enjoy the company of people we care about. Great food and drinks and even better friends will ensure a successful get together.
