What are the benefits of hiring employees with ADHD?

So are doing an interview, and you realize that the employee that you are about to hire has ADHD. You might think that this is a bad thing, but it really can be a huge help to your business. Just because people with ADHD have trouble concentrating, they certainly are not incapable of doing a good job, nor are they going to be a bad hire. People with ADHD can really help you, and they sometimes can bring ideas to the table that you might not have though of. How is this possible?

I work with some people who have ADHD, and while it can be hard to really keep them calm, they have a tremendous motor. They can work all day, and as long as it is busy they are under control. Think about that, how many people actually like it when it is busy? The majority of people I know hate to work, and I know a few who tend to want to leave early as often as possible. It is refreshing to see people who are at their best when the business is flowing and you need people to work hard.

People with ADHD tend to be very outside the box thinkers. They have vivid imaginations, and are always coming up with crazy ideas, or are willing to do extra projects for you. Every business needs someone who can come up with ideas, and is willing to just shout out the first thing that pops into thier head. You can't have a business full of yes-men, or those who can't come up with an idea to save their lives for fear that it might be seen as stupid.

Since people with ADHD tend to be more energetic, it can be a good shot of energy to the office. If others are sluggish, it will certainly change when you see a person who can't sit still walk into the office. While you don't want to hire them to work at a cubicle, you can take advantage of that enthusiasm to motivate others. Who wouldn't want to walk into the office on the first day and see people who are passionate about their work, or at least appear to be at first glance. A great selling point for a company.

Most importantly, it helps from a diversity standpoint. You don't want to be the employer who isn't going to hire people simply because they have trouble sitting still. It would be illegal, and who wouldn't want to work for an employer that gave everyone an equal chance, and was willing to hire qualified people no matter what side issues might exist. It won't effect the effort they put in, and so they should be hired if qualified.

ADHD has its problems, but it also presents some opportunities. You are going to get a hard worker by default, and you are going to get someone who is usually creative, or is willing to think outside the box. That is a great asset to have when you are at work, and can potentially help the business thrive.
