Going camping is an age-old tradition in many countries and it can be a great memory builder, particularly for families. Getting out into the wilderness and braving the elements is probably cheaper than staying in hotels and going out to eat, but it isn't difficult to see how camping is more expensive than just staying home. Here are a few thoughts on how camping can be more expensive than a weekend spent at the old homestead.
Fees and travel
Camping is not necessarily free. Again, it is usually cheaper to stay at a campsite than a hotel, but there is usually still a fee for most campgrounds. This can include parking, services, and programs that are offered. Even camping in state or national parks can carry a fee for permits. In addition, there is the expense of travel, which can vary depending on the amount of gas that travelers need to expend. If people live in hot areas or they load down their vehicle with gear, the cost of gas can increase as the vehicle has to work harder at transporting their people.
Food
Obviously, people have to spend money on food if they stay home. However, when people go camping they tend to stock up on particular types of food. This can include freeze-dried wilderness food, s'more fixings, snacks, and "special" beverages. In addition, there is the expense of ice for the cooler, which some people have to keep stocked if they are camping for multiple days. Some people also end up buying fast food or eating out on the road as they travel to or from their campsite.
Equipment
Finally, there is the "gear" attached to camping. This can include tents, sleeping bags, chairs, stoves, and other camping necessities. Even if people have all of the basics, they may need to refill their supply of bug spray, sunscreen, propane, first aid kits, and firewood. The experienced camper may have most of this material in a place where they can find it, but when people do not camp very often, they may find that they have to go out and buy those little "extras" that can no longer be found.
Again, camping is a fun experience and many people enjoy it, particularly during the summer. There are plenty of ways to spend more money than camping, but people should not assume that camping is going to be "dirt" cheap. Anytime people pursue a social activity that requires equipment, food, and travel, there is going to be some level of expense. Therefore, when people plan a camping trip they should also plan their budget so they are ready to hit the great outdoors and make it affordable at the same time.
