Safe driving takes a lot of concentration and focus. The fewer distractions you have while behind the wheel of a car, the less chance there is that you will be involved in an accident. While some people may have the ability to focus amidst distractions, the majority of people do not.
There are so many distractions that can take one's focus off of driving. Talking on your cell phone, text messaging, listening to the radio, conversations in the car, billboards, and other drivers can all be distractions. The list doesn't stop here. It could go on and on. Sometimes the only distraction may be what is going on inside of your own mind. Job stress, family issues or money problems can all affect your driving if you are focusing on them rather than on your driving.
It is very important that when you get behind the wheel of the car you make a concentrated effort to pay attention to not only your driving, but to the driving of others. When you are distracted, you are more prone to an accident. Here are some things you are prone to miss if you are driving while distracted:
-Cars that pull out in front of you.
-Stop signs
-Lights at intersections
-Cars who brake suddenly in front of you
-Pedestrians
-Children playing or riding bikes
-Emergency vehicles
-Cars making any unsafe movement
-Animals
-Debris in the road
The importance of paying attention to your surroundings can not be underestimated when you are behind the wheel of a car. Even if you are a really good driver, there is always someone else behind the wheel of a car doing something to put your safety in jeopardy. Inexperienced drivers, drunk drivers, elderly drivers and sleepy drivers are some of the ones that are especially dangerous.
It is important when driving to keep your distractions to a minimum. Here are some tips on how to do that:
-No eating or drinking while behind the wheel of a cereal
-No putting on makeup
-No sexual activity
-No reading
-No talking on the cell phone
-No text messaging
-No disciplining children
-No drinking of alcohol
-No drug use
By concentrating and focusing on your driving as well as the driving of those around you, you can improve your chances of avoiding an accident. One last important tip is to remember never to become so comfortable in your driving ability that you become careless. This overconfidence can lead to an accident.
