How to avoid shaving bumps

Silky soft, hairless, smooth skin is what everyone tries to achieve out of a shave. Shaving is the quickest, least painful method of getting rid of unwanted hair, though it does have its downsides, which are shaving bumps. These red little raised hills contain a hair which has curled back into the skin caused the area to become inflamed. They can look unsightly and as expected can be painful. However, with a good shaving routine they can be eliminated.

Exfoliate
Exfoliating the area before shaving will get rid of any dead skin cells on the skin for a smoother shave as the hairs will be more easily removed. Use a body scrub that contains granules that penetrate deep into the skin to remove all the dead skin cells while also massaging the skin for that extra sensation.

Warm Water
Take a warm bath before shaving to open the pores so in order to make the hairs stand up. This will also make shaving easier as the razor will sit on the skin for a closer and more even shave.

Shaving oil (a natural way)
Never use soap for shaving, as it is very drying to your skin and will cause dry skin which are prone to ingrown hairs. A natural product which has been used for generations is extra virgin olive oil, this is because it gives a smooth shave while not stripping the skin of its natural oils and yet while also moisturising the skin. Apply the oil liberally to the area and using small strokes shave, ensuring you rinse after every stroke. Wash the blade after every stroke in warm soapy water to de-clog it.

While using olive oil, you can also use a shaving brush which will make the hairs stand up on end so your razor can catch them all much more quickly, easily and efficiently.

Shaving Creams/Lotions
If you do not like using shaving oil, always invest in a good quality shaving cream or lotion to apply to your skin for shaving.

Razor
Choosing a razor which is suitable is important to eliminate ingrown hairs. The blade should always be sharp and clean for the best possible shave to minimise ingrown hairs. Razors that are meant for men should not be used for women because then are much too harsh. There are many different razors about, some which contain strips to retain and lock in moisture into the skin and curving into the skins natural shape. These types of razors give the best effects. Also, shave in small smooth stokes on the skin, do not shave harshly or very quickly as you can cut yourself.

After shave lotion/oil/cream
Some people need an after shave product which minimises shaving bumps and also moisturises the skin to make it feel and look silky soft. You should look for products that are for sensitive skin because the skin is very sensitive after shaving and needs protection. Choose products that are fragrance free as to not irritate your skin as it is most vulnerable after shaving and exfoliating.

These four steps will surely lead you on your way to eliminating shaving bumps. However make sure that you use these steps not just this time, but every time you shave.
