The first Disgaea game featured wacky characters and stories that served the purpose of providing comic relief. The second game follows the trend, but it does need to be said that while it does, it is more serious than the first title due to some of the main characters having more serious personalities. The plot is also a bit more mature but it still has that comedic element to it.
Still though, there are characters in this game that are humourous and Etna is one of those characters. Tink is also another character that's funny.
Etna herself is a returning character from the first game and it's odd considering that characters from previous games only make cameos and can be played as special characters. In this title, she's one of the main characters. She's also her usual self and is as devious and funny as ever.
An introduction to Etna:
In the first game, Etna was loyal to Laharl's father though she did warm up to Laharl eventually. In fact, she was caught trying to use all manner of weapons on him at the start of the original. Regardless though, as mentioned, she did end up warming to Laharl.
In Disgaea 2, she is involved in a rivalry with Laharl and wants to defeat Overlord Zenon for her own personal reasons. At the end of the day, she thought it would look good on her resume and also give her the ability to challenge Laharl. However, her plan hits a snag when she runs into Adell and his friends. At first, she beats them easily enough. But later on, she is summoned by Adell's mother and she is considerably weakened thanks to having her level reset to one.
Like in the first game, she also commands a squad of prinnies who do much of her dirty work for her. She doesn't treat them very well at all like she didn't in the first game and she basically sees the as nothing more than servants who are there to help prevent her from getting her hands dirty. She is always plotting in this game as well.
Etna as a playable character:
Like in Disgaea 1, she is proficient with spears. She can use them well and so it's recommended that you don't equip her with other weapons. Her special ability allows to her to boost the statistics of prinnies who are stood next to her in adjacent squares. Outside of that ability and the weapon skills she can gain, she only has access to three unique skills. They all rely on her attack statistic to deal damage.
Due to using spears, she doesn't need to be placed next to an opponent to attack either. Instead, she can attack enemies when she's two squares away from them which is handy.
