June 10th is National Iced Tea Day and it is the one day each year dedicated to creating awareness for that wonderfully cool summertime beverage known as Iced Tea. The purpose of National Iced Tea Day is to make people aware of, and to encourage them to enjoy, the great taste and many health benefits that iced tea contains.
People have suspected for centuries that Tea contains properties within it that promote good health, and they weren't incorrect in their assumptions, whether tea is consumed hot or cold it still contains antioxidants within it. Antioxidants help slow down our aging processes, including the development of age related illnesses such as arthritis, heart disease, and even cancer. Antioxidants accomplish this by stabilizing the cell damaging free radicals within us. Although Green and White teas contain higher amounts of antioxidants than Black or Oolong teas, all of the teas made from Camellia Sinensis plant contain antioxidants. Green, White, Black and Oolong tea are all made from the Camellia Sinensis plant, it is just the method in which they are processed that is different, and this process is also the reason why these teas contain varying amounts of antioxidants within them.
Although herbal teas are not generally made from the Camellia sinensis plant, they are made from a variety of other herbs and spices, and each herbal tea has it's own unique health benefits depending on which herbs it is comprised of.
Iced tea can be easily made in a number of ways, and the good news is that it can be made from Green, Black, White, Oolong or any flavor of Herbal tea. This means that you are able to turn your favorite hot beverage into a refreshingly iced cold drink during the hot summer months. A basic tea mix is made by simply steeping 4 teabags in your teapot, add about 4 tablespoons of sugar or honey into this strong tea while it is still warm enough to dissolve it, and then pour the tea into a one liter or one quart container. Fill the remainder of the container with water and shake. It is that simple. Put the container in the fridge for the tea to cool.
Adding additional flavors to your iced tea is just as simple. Perhaps the easiest method of creating flavored iced tea is to use flavored tea bags or Herbal tea bags. Prepare as above.
Another method of flavoring iced tea is to add one half cup of your choice of orange, blueberry, grape, apple, raspberry, lemon, cherry or other juice into your one liter or one quart container of tea. You can also use fruit or berries, just be sure to cube your fruit, or crush your berries before adding them in with your tea mixture. Generally one half of a fruit, or one half cup of berries is sufficient to provide a rich flavor within the tea mix.
If you really want to celebrate National Iced Tea Day in style, host an Iced Tea Party that day, or simply invite friends over, and introduce them to a few of the many flavors of Iced tea. Encourage your children, or your local school, to hold a tea party that day. Spread the word around, June 10th is National Iced Tea Day, and the health benefits of tea are definitely something to celebrate.
