Dealing with depression is not easy. It can be a huge struggle, one that can be constant and ongoing. Do not ignore the feelings of depression, or they will get worse. Address the problem head on.
First of all, do not stop your life. Curling up on the couch is tempting, but it will only worsen the depression. Go to work, go to class or play with your kids, depending on your situation. Being productive will make you feel productive, which will help you draw out of the painful feelings.
Also, assess your life. Find out what may have caused the depression to surface. There is a possibility the depression is chemical, but most cases are environment-based. If the cause is something you can talk out with loved ones, work it out. Do not hold in any emotions. Dealing with the problem may not cure the depression, but it can definitely help.
If the depression feels absolutely unbearable or you have any thoughts of self-mutilation or suicide, see a doctor. Depression is a medical condition and sometimes you cannot treat it all by yourself.
Remember depression is not exclusive to you. Though you may feel like you are the only one who has ever been depressed or that your depression is worse than anyone else's, depression is sadly common.
How do you know you are depressed? Look for a disinterest in things you normally like. If you usually fix your hair everyday but for the past month a ponytail has been your primary hairstyle, something could be up. If hanging out with friends is a little too much socializing for your taste, wonder why. Feelings of worthlessness, sadness, and irritability are all sign of depression. If you are not feeling like yourself, depression could be the answer.
Do not ignore the feelings: always address everything. Talk to your friends, family, and strangers on the street - whatever works for you. Write. Compose music. Work out.
Furthermore, ask your loved ones if they have noticed anything different about you. You may think you can hide depression, but those close to you will know. You will need the support team to beat it. Do not stop any treatments a doctor suggests until your loved ones say you are back to normal. Ask those who are honest. This is the only way to really see your progress.
Depression can cloud the mind. You will not think the same as normal, nor will you see things exactly as they are. You are not crazy. You have depression and now you must deal with it.
