What to pack for a vacation

You've been eagerly anticipating your trip to paradise all year and it's finally here. You are beginning your break from the stresses of everyday life. You wake up, excited to sit on the beach and sip on a margarita, when you realize you forgot your bathing suit. What a pain.

Lucky for you, I am anal-retentive and have a list saved of almost every possible thing you might need on your vacation. Keep in mind that the list will vary depending on your destination and length of stay. Also, keep in mind that I'm a female, and thus this may be a bit targeted to women.

First, and most obviously, clothes. Don't forget your pants (jeans, capris, shorts, and/or comfortable "around the house" pants) or tops ("everyday" shirts, blouses, sweaters, and/or tank tops). If going to a warm destination or a hotel with a pool, pack your bathing suit. Include your pajamas/nightgown.

If you expect to go to a formal dinner, include a nice dress and perhaps some jewelry. Make sure to pack underwear, bras, and socks. If going to a cold destination, pack a coat, scarf, hat, gloves, etc. Expect rain? Don't forget a rain jacket and/or umbrella. Always have a light jacket at the least, in case evenings get chilly. Think about where you're going and what activities you will be doing while packing shoes. You may need flip-flops, sandals, heels, boots, and/or tennis shoes.

Include make up, nail polish, and nail polish remover. Remember your hair drier (unless you are confident the hotel provides one), a brush and/or comb, and ponytail holders or other hair accessories. Pack your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. Don't forget face wash, Q-tips, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, soap, razors, tweezers, and feminine products. Other toiletries that might be needed are lotions, perfumes, and deodorant.

If you expect to be in the sun while on your trip, don't forget sunscreen (the higher the SPF, the better!), aloe, hat, and sunglasses. You may need to bring a travel alarm clock. Definitely don't forget any prescription medications you may have as well as over-the-counter medications and/or vitamins.

It's always good to have board games on hand or a deck of cards. Your iPod or a Discman is good while relaxing or jogging. Don't forget your cell phone and cell phone charger. Bring paper and pens, and don't forget addresses of family and friends (along with some stamps) if you plan on sending out postcards.

It's good to have cash on hand or traveler's checks. Also, I always take scissors
