How immigration has affected the UK

The UK must be one of the most generous countries in the world when it comes to immigration. No-one appears to be turned away, including some very undesirable elements that have nothing to offer the country but are all too happy to run it down and attempt to undermine its cultural heritage.

The English have proved themselves to be the most tolerant of people when it comes to welcoming other nationalities into their country - we have a diverse and vibrant cross section of people living here and few object as long as they fit in and contribute to society. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and there has been a growing resentment against immigration in general which can be directly linked to an increase in certain sectors of the immigrant population refusing to fit in with British cultural beliefs and lifestyle. As a consequence, many citizens feel that the British way of life is under threat and there has been an unfortunate backlash against all immigrants.

Do immigrants benefit the UK, or any country for that matter? I believe that controlled immigration can be of great benefit to a country but that the current rate of uncontrolled immigration, both legal and illegal, to this country is putting an enormous strain on its resources. There has to be a limit on the number of people this small island can comfortably support and its indigenous population has to be given first priority. At the moment it appears that every Tom, Dick and Harry can wander over here and immediately gain access to free health, schooling and housing - this has caused considerable resentment and anger, even to the point of an increased support of the British National Party (BNA), a political party that is notorious for its stand against immigrants and has serious racial issues. Ten years ago, this party was considered a bit of a joke, now it is a serious contender in the next general elections and even managed to win two seats in the EU Parliament at our recent elections. This is as a direct result of the lack of a proper immigration policy by the current government.

Unfortunately, the damage has already been done. The once tolerant people of Britain have become tired and angry of having to accommodate so many different cultures at the expense of their own. Political correctness has dictated that every culture be given a free rein except the British one. We are expected to bend over backwards to welcome and embrace everyone while our own heritage is ridiculed and belittled.

On the whole, I would have to say that I see little benefit to this country of immigration in its current form. Surely every country has the right to accept only those with skills that are needed and a desire to fit into their 'new' country - this includes language, religion and culture. I feel we should be implementing a system along the lines of Australia, not only would it benefit the UK but also the immigrants who would come to be seen as an asset rather than a threat and a nuisance.
