8. Do not veer off topic.
Arguments often wander off the path and get lost in the woods. Keep a clear picture of your intended goal and stick to it. Acknowledge that there may be more to talk about later, but remind the other person that it's important to focus on one discussion at a time.
9. Avoid "He said/She said".
It happens all the time in an argument: one person cites a previous experience and the other person says it didn't happen that way. It isn't worth arguing about who is right. Realize that it will only draw you off topic and find a different way to make your point.
10. Concede the point when warranted.
During an argument, you will make some valid points and the other person will make some valid points as well. Acknowledge your opponent's points when they are well founded. Similarly, if you speak in anger, or in error, and are called on it, admit your mistake graciously and move on.
An argument may end with an agreement to disagree. However, if you've stayed calm and presented rational, sound arguments, chances are those ideas will stay with the other person. On the other hand, wearing down the other person by shouting the loudest may feel like a victory but it will do little to influence the other person's point of view.
