Chapter One: Honestly, Why Are We Cops?

Here I am again sitting at home recovering from another gun shot wound, not exactly a wound, but a bruise. The vest I wore took all the shock of the bullet, but the energy transferred to my bones was severe. I am on the disabled list for two weeks, and then the doctor will examine me again and determine whether I am fit for duty.

Then there are the shooting reports and the psyche evaluations, not to mention the visit from internal affairs. Darla, my wife, she is in the same boat; she shot the suspect at the same time I did. He shot me in the back and while I was on the ground, she and I both fired on him killing him at the scene. So we both have a ton of paperwork and endless administration red tape to deal with.

Chief Singer was sympathetic, but relentless; we had two weeks administrative leave to deal with. The up side was the news had us all over it, cracking the case, and stopping all of those nasty kidnappers. The city did not even know that business was going on, not until the kidnappers grabbed a kid from the valley, and Darla and I got wind of it. We were all over it like white on rice. Actually, we stumbled on to the ring by accident while investigating another missing child case. So it really wasn't that brilliant as far as police work went. The news media didn't think so, we were hero's and who were we to argue. Darla and I, we love being detectives, it is in our blood.

The morning is a special time around the Small household; I come to the living room and have a cup of coffee, watch my fish, read the paper and say good morning to our nanny slash housekeeper, Betty. I am very fond of her; she has been with us for years. She is valuable member of our family and is a very special friend to both Darla and me. Betty has been with us through thick and thin.

The aquarium was full of activity this morning; it looked as though Skippy Jack, the big angelfish, was organizing a parade, or some dance event. Skippy Jack was the Mayor and big fish in my aquarium, which I call 'Fish City'.

I love the fish, the same way you would love your cat or dog, they were special to me and they responded to my presence the same way your pets responds to you. I sat and wondered what the next movement was going to be for the fish, they were like a kaleidoscope, beautiful colors all
