You may not be aware of this very special June holiday but June 10th is officially National Iced Tea Day. Although the entire month of June is dedicated as Iced Tea Month it is June 10th when most celebrations for this event generally occur. So how do you celebrate National Iced Tea Day? You begin by drinking iced tea on that day. You can also attend, or host a Tea Party featuring a variety of tasty iced teas, and invite all your friends, relatives, or work acquaintances to join you in celebrating National Iced Tea Day.
Tea Parties have been around for hundreds of years, but it the United Kingdom's tradition of enjoying an afternoon High tea, that truly brought Tea Parties into the limelight of Social Affairs. First brought into being in the 1700's, High tea was actually the practice of having the afternoon Tea at the high table, rather than the lower drawing room table. However since it's first introduction, High Tea has come to be a term that describes much more elegant, or formal afternoon affairs. Ladies don their finest bonnets, set out their best china, and serve their finest delicacies and most exquisite teas to their guests as they arrive.
Not much is different at a National Iced Tea Day Party except that it is a unique selection of iced teas that are served along side of the sandwiches and pastries rather than hot tea. Preparing your iced teas is easy. You simply choose which flavors you want to offer up to your guests, brew them up the day before, and then allow each batch to sit overnight in the fridge to enhance it's unique flavoring.
Basic Tea Mix:
4 Teabags of your choice of black or green tea
5 tablespoons sugar or honey
1 liter of water
Put 4 teabags of your choice into a large size teapot, add in boiled water, and allow to steep. To allow your sugar to dissolve, add your sugar while tea is still warm.
When slightly cooled transfer the tea from your teapot into a one liter bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water to about two inches below the rim. Shake to mix. Place in the fridge to cool.
This is when the creating gets fun. You can add virtually any flavorings of your choosing to your iced tea. It generally takes about twelve hours for the full flavor of your additions to flow into your basic mixture so count on your Tea sitting overnight in the fridge before you consume it. You can flavor with spices, herbs, fruit juices, or the basic fruit and berries themselves. The possibilities are endless.
If adding juices in to flavor your tea, simply pour in your choice of either one half cup, or one full cup of your favorite juice into your basic iced tea mix. There should be just about enough room left in your one liter bottle to allow this.
For lemon or orange flavored iced tea, simply chop up one half of an orange or lemon, and add it into your basic tea mix. If you are adding in berries then be sure to crush them first to allow for maximum flavor enhancement.
For spearmint or peppermint iced tea you can either purchase the herbal tea bags, and use these to easily create your iced tea, or you can add 2 tablespoons of the herb itself into your mix.
You choose the flavors of your iced teas and the add ins that you want to include in. With the wide selection of herbal teas on the market, making flavored iced teas is very easy, and inexpensive.
Serve a variety of fancy sandwiches, and baked goods alongside your teas, and have a wonderful Iced Tea Day Party in true High Tea style.
