UFC 101 Preview

by Rebecca Saint

Created on: July 05, 2009

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially become a historically recognizable sport now that it has marked over one hundred events in its existence. Beginning with UFC 1, featuring Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock and a long list of other memorable names fighting in a totally different style than what we know now and see as UFC 101: Declaration approaches on August 8, 2009. BJ Penn puts his belt on the line in the lightweight division, where he's never been beaten and hosting ten other fights in four weight classes, this promises to be an event to remember.

Declaration features a host of fighters with the skills to make every bout interesting and intense, but of course there are a few that we can look forward to above all others.

Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellegrino

Josh "The Dentist" Neer is a well rounded, tough as nails fighter who isn't afraid to run in and take a few shots in order to give a few. He's got experience at his back, with a total of twenty five wins against seven losses. He's been in and out of the UFC and knows what this game is all about, making it work to his advantage everytime he steps foot in the Octagon.

Pellegrino is a pro when it comes to submissions. He's a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a strong background in wrestling, making his ground game one of the most dangerous around.

Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida
Da Spyder, a prodigy of none other than The Huntington Beach Bad Boy himself Tito Ortiz, Kendall Grove has many advantages at his side. His reach advantage makes him nearly untouchable and gives him an edge in submissions and training at Big Bear has improved his cardio and stamina to such great heights that Grove can easily run a whole bout without feeling winded. Grove has the heart of a winner and the strength of a brawler and it shows when he steps up to fight.

Almeida's strenghts lay on the ground, making this an interesting match up. He's a trainee of the Gracie Barra Academy, giving him an edge over most when it comes to submissions. For this bout, let's hope he worked on his stand up since Grove has an impeccable sprawl.

Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin

The man who's record in the UFC remains undefeated in the middle weight class has stepped up to the light heavy weight division. Anderson Silva has found no challenge among the middle weights of this league, and now he aims to hold the championship belt in both divisions. His first step towards this achievement is defeating TUF 1 Champ and fan favorite
