Poetry: Natural love

by Bassam Sidiki

I saw plains of green and yellow,
the grass rising to my thighs
where we could have wandered and run
beneath the birds, the clouds and sun.

I saw trees so tall and generous;
their arms open, offering a shady embrace.
Where we could have lied and slept
and dreamt about the day we met.

I saw a canal flowing gently
where we could have swum and bathed
and splashed water with innocent smiles
and talked about life's many trials.

I saw a sky so blue and brilliant,
how I wish we had watched it together.
The sun would sink and the moon would rise
and the colours of dusk would sooth our eyes.

I saw hills so majestic, standing still.
As if waiting for us to come and play.
We would have raced to reach the top
and to let you win, I would purposely drop.

I woke up, seeing that you were not there.
I had seen these wonders alone.
I saw that you might feel the same way
Oh, dear eyes! This time, do not betray.
