June 15th is Power of a Smile Day, and it is the one day each year when we are encouraged to get out, and share our smile with the rest of the world. There is a lot of power in a smile. A smile has the amazing ability to brighten another person's day. When we smile, we release into our body a feel good chemical message known as an endorphins, it makes us happy. Smiles are contagious so when we smile at another person, they smile back, and they release this same feel good message into their own body. We have the power to make other people happy by simply smiling at them, and this is the whole logic behind Power Of A Smile Day, to make the world a happier place one smile at a time.
Power of a Smile Day revolves around images of smiles, Smilies, happiness, and the warmth of a sunshiny day. You can host a party to celebrate this special June 15th holiday or teach others the wonderful crafts that can be created for this very Smiley day. There are an amazing array of craft ideas for Power of a Smile Day and most can be very easily created by even the tiniest fingers.
You can paint a clay pot with flowery, sunshiny, smiley images and then plant a sunflower plant within it. You can also use construction paper to design a bright colorful flower. Paint a smiling face on it's front, tape it to a straw, and plant this flower in your pot to view until your sunflower is ready to make it's appearance.
You can create a Power of a Smile Day necklace or bracelet using nylon thread and large bright yellow beads. Use a fast dry marker, or ink, to draw your little smiley faces on each of the beads before you thread them onto your string.
Make your own unique magnetic Smilies from yellow felt. Use a lid to trace the circle designs onto the yellow felt square, cut out your circles, and decorate them with unique and amusing smiling faces with a black felt marker. You can easily glue googly eyes to the felt if you want a more humorous Smile. The finishing touch is a dab of glue on a small magnet, attach it to the center back of your circle, and you have wonderful magnetic Smilies. These can also be made using yellow construction paper.
Bakers dough can be used to created a multitude of happy smiling faces. For creating silly caterpillars, smiling flowers, grinning happy face circles, silly animals, or a classic lady bug, this classic Bakers dough has been used by mothers and teachers around the world. It is simple to make with just a few basic ingredients and it's creations can last for virtually forever. For Power of a Smile Day it is the perfect craft project to assign to busy fingers, both young and old alike are happy to spend an afternoon creating, and then baking these smiling creations.
Basic Bakers Dough Mix:
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
About 1 1/2 cups of water
Knead dough until smooth. Add extra flour or water if needed. Divide dough into three piles, add a different food coloring to each of these, then let your creative group begin crafting. If you want to hang your ornaments be sure to create a large hole before they are put in to the oven. Bake your creations at 300 degrees for around 45 minutes or until set. Spray shellac to coat and create a shiny appearance.
Power of a Smile Day would not be complete without a few treats so decorating cookies or cupcakes in bright colors and brilliant smiles is always fun. These are especially enjoyable crafts to make because you get to enjoy your edible creations a little later in the day.
