Tips to relieve morning sickness

Morning sickness occurs in fifty to eighty percent of all pregnant women. One of the earliest signs of pregnancy, morning sickness often begins around the sixth week and lasts until the twelfth week of pregnancy. Though morning sickness can be helped with diet changes many women seek natural herbal cures for the nausea and vomiting. Here are the four most recommended herbs for relieving morning sickness.

Ginger is one of the most commonly recommended herbs for relieving nausea. Soothing ginger teas have been long used for easing motion sickness and dizziness, and in ancient Chinese culture ginger has been used in large doses to bring menstruation. In small amounts however, ginger can help reducing the nausea and upset stomach of morning sickness. Women not interested in ginger teas can also try eating ginger cookies or sipping ginger ale, both contain enough ginger to be effective without being potentially dangerous.

Mints are also stomach soothers that can ease morning sickness. Peppermint and spearmint are the two most commonly used and are among the safest mints to take during pregnancy. Still, pregnant women should use moderation with mints as large amounts are reported to cause miscarriage. Drinking no more than a cup of mint tea at a time can reduce morning sickness safely.

Black horehound is another herb that some women use to treat morning sickness. You can find this herb in many herbal teas used to treat both morning sickness and motion sickness.Alternatively , black horehound contains an aspirin-like compound that may increase nausea in some women. Those who have any stomach irritation from aspirin should probably avoid using black horehound.

Citrus fruits also have properties that sooth morning sickness in some women. Lemon, grapefruit, and orange are all great citrus fruits to drink when feeling nauseous from morning sickness. You can also add some of the juice or the rinds of these fruits to a cup of tea for a less potent tasting drink that will help relieve morning sickness. Of course eating the fruits raw will also give the same benefits, though some women find the texture off putting.

Mothers should remember that it is best to check with a doctor or physician before attempting to relive morning sickness herbally. This is especially important if you are already taking medication or supplements of any kind, including over the counter prenatal vitamins. For most women, however, using herbs to help treat morning sickness is safe and effective. Knowing which herbs are effective against nausea can give pregnant women an upper hand in seeking relief.
