At the game's start, you created an entirely new species and chose the planet they would inhabit and come to know as their home planet in the Milky Way galaxy when they spread their wings and colonise other planets in the vast galaxy. Your species was brought to the planet after an asteroid carrying various forms of primitive life crashed into the ocean and sunk into its murky depths. When it broke apart, your species was set loose in the ocean as a cell based organism. They grew and evolved in the ocean while eating various foods and trying to fend off predators. Eventually, they took to the surface when they had evolved enough (and possibly evolved legs). Following this, your species either befriended or hunted down other species. They continued evolving and this led to their brain becoming large and finally becoming sentient beings. This led to the formation of a tribe. By wiping out or befriending the other tribes, your species managed to become the dominant beings of the planet. After that, your species became fragmented and decided to form various factions/nations/cities or whatever else you want to call it. Eventually, you either crushed the opposition with your military might or subdued them via economic and religious means, which converted them to your cause. This led to your species becoming united as one single species and inventing their first UFO to allow them to explore the galaxy and find new homes for them to settle on.
When you first begin the space phase and after designing your UFO, you will be tasked with exploring some ruins. It's easy to do and after that, the huge galaxy is yours to explore. It's essentially one big sandbox where you're free to do what you wish and it is the main game. At the beginning of the stage though, you will find that you can't do much and that your UFO is weak. This is due to you needing to find parts. Once you find them, you'll find that you're able to mould entire planets and change their atmosphere as well as destroy civilisations without breaking a sweat. Furthermore, you can seed new life on planets and even create life from your UFO. There are various tasks to complete as well that earn you badges which unlock equipment for you to buy.
The main goal of this stage though, if you really want to complete the game, is to reach the centre of the galaxy. To do so, you'll need to find most parts for your UFO, be rich, have allies and plenty of planets colonised throughout the vast galaxy. This is needed because you will need to get past the Grox, an ancient and very powerful race of aliens who have an empire spanning many, many planets
