In the beginning of the game, you created an entire new species and chose the planet they would inhabit and see as their home world in the Milky Way galaxy. Your species was brought to the planet after an asteroid carrying various forms of primitive life crashed and sunk into the depths of the ocean. When it broke apart, your species was set loose in the ocean as a cell based organism. They grew and evolved in the ocean while eating various foods and trying to fend off predators, then eventually took to the surface when they had evolved enough. Following this, your species either befriended or hunted down other species. They continued evolving and this led to their brain becoming large and finally becoming sentient beings. This led to the formation of a tribe. By wiping out or befriending the other tribes, your species managed to become the dominant beings of the planet. This is where the civilisation stage starts. It's up to you to unite the rest of your species as one nation.
Your goal in this stage is to either conquer the other nations/cities or win them over as friends religiously or economically. This stage is really reminiscent of most real-time strategy games and so if you've played them before; you should have a good idea about what to expect from the gameplay here. Like in most real-time strategy games, you also have to acquire resources to get any income. The resource in this game is spice and it's acquired via capturing the various geysers scattered across the map. In some ways, it's a war of attrition and it may feel as though the stage won't end but the best bet is to rush the geysers to get income flowing in quickly so that's basically a non-issue thus giving you an advantage over the computer.
In this stage, you also get to design all of the various buildings, though how you design them is purely cosmetic. How you design the vehicles though does affect their statistics, so it's wise to consider what parts you're placing on them.
Each rival opponent has a sphere of influence indicating what section of the planet they control. As you or your opponents grow stronger, you'll find that the sphere increases gradually due to it representing your power.
When a city/opponent is defeated, their city will be given to you to control. Various superpowers depending on choices you've made throughout the game are also unlocked. These help out in the civilisation stage and affect the abilities you have in the next and final stage: the space stage.
