It was a silly argument,
we let it go too far,
I never should have uttered,
"Let me out of this damn car!"
My anger was the catalyst,
you finally called my bluff.
The last word was your victory,
you growled, "I've had enough!"
Highway stretched before me,
as far as I could see,
a winding ribbon of asphalt
taking you away from me.
The taillights winked in taunting,
then I was all alone.
I couldn't believe you'd left me
to find my own way home.
On that deserted highway,
anger ran its course.
Kneeling by the roadside,
I sobbed out my remorse.
By the time you'd made a U-turn,
I'd made one of my own,
expressing mutual sorrow,
we resumed the journey home.

To take their meal, side by side, at the bleak cafe in town.
The arrogant
"Calm Down?" I shouted
As I leapt from the chair. "Calm Down?"
