So, when the game first started, the species that you created as a microbial life-form didn't even exist until an asteroid crashed to the ocean of the planet that you'd chose to play on. After that, your creature in the cell stage emerged from a part of the asteroid and bred. Over time it grew larger and developed over the course of many years. After braving the oceans and eating other cellular life-forms and plants while trying to keep safe from other predators, your creature evolved and could suddenly take to the surface of the planet. During that time, your species continued to evolve and while your species underwent various changes, the biggest change was the fact that your species' brain kept getting larger and larger. This led to your species gaining sentience and finally congregating into various tribes. This is where the tribal stage begins as you try and unite the local tribes under your banner.
Now then, the tribal stage is where how you've built your species in terms of customising starts to matter less and less. When you first start out, you'll need to click on the hut where your village is. This will allow you to choose outfits for your tribe. The statistics provided by the items will help out with this stage, but this is the only time. Also, if you click on the hut, you can also build structures for your tribe that provides them with weapons amongst other things. In addition, you only have three tribe members when the stage is started. You can get more later.
The ultimate goal just like the previous stage is to either defeat or befriend the enemy tribes. In order to do so, you need to gather food. This is done by killing animals, fishing or by harvesting the various plants that have grown on the planet.
Soon after starting the stage and doing what the game tells you, a cutscene will show up introducing the first tribe for you to combat. So, when that happens, you're going to need to make a choice. Do you want to exterminate or befriend them? In either case, you can follow the path leading from your village to find them. If you decide to destroy them, you'll need to take out their main hut.
When you take out, you'll unlock various things and your village will grow in size allowing you to support more tribe members. Two other tribes will appear and it's up to you to either befriend or destroy them again. Once they're defeated, three more will appear. When they're defeated, you'll have completed the tribal stage.
