There is a lovely place for trout fishing in Gandy Creek, Randolph county WV, Route 40, end of Dryfork Rd. Wv itself, has so many lovely rivers, lakes and streams, but this one is more than lovely, to say the least. It rises on the West flank, of Spruce Knob, the States highest mountain, and flows down through the Monongahela National Forest. It really makes you to realize the saying, "Almost Heaven", with it's natural beauty. All along it, lie, natural falls and peaks, as the stream winds through picturesque scenes. My husband and I have fished it quite often. We have caught natives, browns, rainbows, and even a golden trout or two.
The native is a beautiful trout to behold. It is one, you really hate to take, from it's natural habitat. I'd rather throw them back, to where they come from. Fishermen, choose, many different lures, and baits, and different times of year, different ones do better than others. Many like to fly fish, along this creek. They stock this creek weekly, and some fishers follow the stock truck closely. To me, that doesn't give much of a challenge. I think, it more of a challenge, to actually pick out where they are lying. They like the holes of the creek, for protection. A good riffle, or under a rock ledge, provides a great environment, to pick one out. The trained eye, can spot them, even in the waters. But, if you're not real careful, they...will spot you first.
They are a very smart fish. Once they've been hooked and missed, you'll have a hard time catching one. Better to find a new spot, and try again. The surroundings are so serene, I loose my mindset for fishing, and begin taking pictures of the beauty around. I can't help but stand in awe, of the area, and enjoy the peace it provides. My husband, will out-fish me, hands down. And most times, that's why I give up so quickly, is his success, and my lack. He is definitely more patient, with the whole idea. That is a key, to catching trout, and most others types of fish, is patience.
I've enjoyed watching deer feeding, while he is fishing along. Even a black bear, is not strange to see, along these waters. It truly is, wilderness area. I've had the pleasure of photographing lots of it! Once you come here, you too...will be "hooked", on it's beauty! I suggest it highly, for a great visit, and great place to put in a pole or two! The surrounding area, offers plenty to do, even taking in Spruce Knob lake, the highest point in WV, for a day! There are campgrounds nearby, and nature's beauty all around. The offer is for nature at it's best, and just plenty of relaxation, and peace. If you're looking for a great place to get away from the hustle of it all, I suggest a day fishing on the Gandy! You won't be sorry you did. Leave your cares behind, and come to a place, where nature is all around.
Don't come expecting to "plug in" to anything other, than wild. Because, this is definitely it! Fishermen come from far and wide, to enjoy these streams. And the locals, know best, all the great spots along it. But there's plenty of room, to make your own "spot" you can come to and enjoy! Come on in, the waters are fine, here in Gandy Creek, WV!
