A guide to the cell stage in Spore (PC)

Spore is a game about evolution. It is about creating life and then watching it evolve throughout the many years that pass, while guiding the created species with a helping hand.

When the game begins, you'll be looking at an entire galaxy modelled after the Milky Way. While looking at the galaxy, you'll also see that there are twinkling circular icons on the map. These represent planets you can play on. These are where your creature will begin its existence as a microbial or cell-based life form, after crashing to the sea in a meteorite/asteroid.

So then, choose the planet you like the look of and want. After all, it is the planet you'll be looking at for quite a while when you progress on from the cell stage and become a 'more evolved living organism'.

When you're happy with your selection, there's not much to do with the cell editor as it is rather basic in all honesty. The main choice is whether you want your species to be herbivores or carnivores and also what colour skin they have. After your selection has been made, watch the cutscene showing the asteroid crashing to the planet's ocean. A chunk of it will break off and when it hits the ocean depths, your species in the form of a microbe will appear.

Now then, when you first come out of the asteroid, you'll find that red and green bits are floating in the water. The red is for carnivores and the green is for herbivores. You'll also see other cellular life moving about. Your goal if a carnivore is to try and kill them which will cause them to explode into chunks of red parts that you can eat. Otherwise, if you're a herbivore, you need to escape the predators of the ocean. At the bottom of the screen, you'll also see a progress bar telling you how far you are from reaching the end of the cell stage and such. Eating things will help you progress down this bar and will also net you DNA points for upgrading your species in cellular form. At the bottom right of your screen, there will also be a button you can click on which shows the history of your species.

Eventually, a cutscene will play. Watch it and collect the item that appears. It's a piece that can be used to upgrade your creature for evolution purposes. These parts really play a main role in the cellular stage, though how you design your species is also important in the next part. A button will also appear and you'll be told to call a mate. This allows you to mate and customise your species while spending DNA points.

Progress on through this stage eating the plants or killing cells alongside collecting parts and you'll be fine. It's not terribly difficult at all.
