To what extent does sexism exist in America today?

by Sarah Ford

Created on: July 03, 2009

Walking down the street it's not long before you begin hearing the catcalls, especially if you're a female. We've grown so use to things such as catcalls though, we hardly pay them any attention anymore. When did it become acceptable for men to over step their boundaries with us though? When did women as a whole stop caring about sexual harassment?

It's not really that we stopped caring it's just we don't want to be considered prudes in this new society. We as women now want to be considered just another guy. We want to play with the big boys and get the big boy's pay check and in doing so we now feel as though it's acceptable to every once and a while be called 'baby' or have males groping us on occasion. The same can be said for men though, it's a two way street after all.

Not only are women victims of sexism in America but men are just as quickly falling prey to the same treatment. Women as I mentioned are now trying to 'hang' with the guys but in doing so women are becoming a lot more bolder than they would have been say a couple of years ago. Women don't think twice about patting a guy on the rump or flirting outlandishly with a male co-worker, just as the male counterparts are likewise not thinking about what's going. Will this series of events ever end or will we continuously go in a circle?

If you really sit back and think about it sexism in America has been around for quite some time. Ever since America was founded in fact. In the beginning it was the woman's job to stay at home and tend to the cooking, cleaning, mending, and the child rearing while the men went out and fought wars and provided for their families. Women weren't really given a choice and to this day while women do have a few more options they're still just as limited. Women are still looked to for child rearing and men are still for the most part stereotyped as the bread winners.

Granted all of that is starting to change while more and more women enter the work place and begin to make more than their husbands do, but society as a whole still has an image of the two sexes and in having said image we're being sexist whether we think we are or not. Will society ever fully evolve past type-casting men and women? Doubtfully, we all have our dreams and ambitions and some women just feel more comfortable as homemakers where as some men are more than willing to provide for their women. Is there anything wrong with that? No, I don't believe there is but as far as sexism goes it's never going away. As I stated before sexism has been around since America was first colonized and it's going to be a hard habit to break even with these changing times.
