Fennel has been used as a sacred and medicinal herb for centuries. It was believed to ward off evil spirits and impart longevity, courage and strength. Whilst there are many cultivated varieties of fennel, all of them are related to wild fennel native to countries bordering the Mediterranean. The variety used in aromatherapy is sweet fennel which is grown in France, Italy and Greece.
The essential oil is steam distilled from the crushed fennel seeds and is pale yellow in colour, with a sweet, spicy, green smell reminiscent of aniseed. Sensitization is possible with this oil and therefore it should not be used in concentrations of more than 1.5%.
Fennel oil's main action is on the digestive system, it is a moving or unblocking oil. It blends well with lavender, marjoram, geranium and rose and may be used as a massage blend or an inhalation. A digestive stimulant, fennel can relieve flatulence and digestive spasms. When food is not carried through the digestive system properly , putrefaction occurs and gas will form. Fennel is one of the main oils to encourage food to be digested satisfactorily and help expel gas. To strengthen and stimulate the digestive system, combine this oil with a small amount of cinnamon and massage over the abdomen.
Fennel can also be used to relieve constipation, it should be diluted in a carrier oil and massaged over the abdomen. As well as the above, fennel is useful in the treatment of nervous indigestion caused by emotional upset or hurrying. It is the main oil for treating a swollen and distended stomach and will relieve bloating after a large, rich meal.
Fennel oil has an important action on the lungs, being a mild expectorant it will help relieve a phlegmy cough. Combine with other appropriate oils in a base oil and use as a chest rub or burn in the room. It also has a diuretic action and increases the loss of fluids from the body. It can be used as a massage blend to detoxify the body for example, when treating cellulite.
It has an oestrogenic action on the body and can help to increase milk production in nursing mothers. It can also help ease painful, engorged breasts, use as a compress.
Fennel oil has been shown to be effective in eliminating lactobacillus which is thought to be the main bacterium that causes tooth decay. This indicates its usefulness in dental preparations such as toothpastes and mouth washes. It can also be used to mask odours.
Using fennel oil can help you relax and be more open to the experience of life.
