Lectures are often tuned out, and therefore should be avoided whenever possible. They are an ineffective method of teaching material, especially considering that many students suffer from short attention spans and a lack of focus and concentration. The lecture format does not play well to certain audiences, and an effective teacher will be proactive and figure out a different approach.
Teachers should not simply lecture, nor should they sit at their desk while teaching. These are the habits of very poor educators. Lectures lend themselves to heavy bouts of note-taking, which is not the forte of many students. If a student is forced to quickly transcribe lecture notes, they are writing the words, but not deciphering the meaning behind them. They lose focus more readily, and thus do not learn. Many students are also unable to keep up with the note-taking, and eventually tune out. Not all students are court stenographers, and cannot choose which ideas and facts are of the most importance.
The lecture format carries with it some negative connotations, and teachers should be wary of its constant usage. While there are many pros as well as cons in regards to the lecture format, a good teaching tip is to use the lecture format sparingly. An effective and dynamic teacher should be implementing a variety of teaching methods on a daily basis in an attempt to liven things up, and reduce boredom.
Many students need motivation, and in today's fast-paced technological society, there needs to be teaching that lends itself to the quick sound bite and increasingly shortened attention span. The lecture format tends to be a trifle boring, and it is easy to lose a student's attention while prattling on endlessly. This does not mean that the teacher needs to do a song and dance routine all day, but they should find a way to capture the attention of the audience, in order to actively impart wisdom.
The lecture format has a pro in that it is the traditional method of teaching, and an air of authority is provided. The teacher should command respect, and should be looming larger at the front of the room while teaching. This gives the teacher a bird's eye view of the classroom, which enables them to better control and discipline the class. This is a traditional method, and while it certainly can be effective, it is falling further behind by the moment.
