"Butterfly Night" is a one volume and one chapter romance manga. The one thing that caught my attention was the name of "Butterfly Night." Unfortunately, that is perhaps the one and only thing appealing about his manga. When I checked it out, I had a bunch of disappointments in Butterfly Night.
The year the story's release was 2006. The writer and artist's name is Kayono.
So far, Butterfly Night is classified as some romance fantasy. However from what I have seen and read, the story is very clich. It does not seem that romantic to me for the most part. However, there are some interesting elements implemented. But, it does not seem they were implemented effectively. So far, it reads more like some softcore smut story.
However, there is criticism towards Kayono. So far, there is a controversy on whether or not Kayono plagiarized from another mangaka named Takashima Kazusa. As a result, the controversy is still going on.
Storyline: D-
So far, it would seem that the story or lack of a story seems to be inspired from Arabian-esque feel. In a sense, it would be a smut version of 1,001 Arabian Nights. If focuses on Princess Sheherazade who is supposed to be married to King Zamasama to avoid a war. However, she gets kidnapped and rescued by Devil Marim, who is a prince and is Zamasama's son.
Marim pretty much takes the virginity away from Sheherazade. And then, Zamasama dies. The two get married and live happily ever after. Overall, Butterfly Night did not really have a story.
Everything about Butterfly Night in regards to the story seems to be very corny and cheesy for the most part. As a story, it is all show with no substance. It focuses on simple sex scenes between Sheherazade and Marim. In short, the story pretty much sucked. It does not even focus on the romance or the development of love at all.
Characters: D-
The characters had potential. However, the characters were portrayed very badly. They were pretty much your stereotypical thief prince and damsel in distress for the most part. The characters had no substance to them at all.
Sheherazade has this uncanny ability to emit pheromones that attracts butterflies. However, it seems to attract men as well.
Marim can only go out at nighttime. If he touches sunlight, it will burn his skin. Inevitably, the sunlight will burn Marim to death.
The characters had much potential to develop. However, the mangaka seemed to have speed things too much.
Illustrations: B
The illustrations seem to be the only positive thing about Butterfly Night. I do have to say that the illustrations were very much well done. However, there is a bit too much sex and nudity in Butterfly Night. Through the illustrations, it would seem that the mangaka focused on the sex and instantaneous love rather than develop any of it. Still, the pictures were well done.
Overall: D-
Butterfly Night is a story that is utterly unappealing. The only positive about the story would be the graphics. Anything else, the story sucks. This is a manga that about anybody should avoid like the plague. The way the story was portrayed, it would lead one to greatly believe that the author of the manga had plagiarized from Takashima.
