Montenegro, meaning Black Mountain, is one of the worlds hidden treasures. It lies in the South-eastern Europe on the coast of the beautiful Adriatic Sea. While Montenegro is a small coastal country, don't be fooled, its tourist attractions and activities don't end in the summer! After all it is a mountainous area.
If arriving with a plane you will most likely land at either Podgorica or Tivat, the two of Montenegros international airports. From there you will need to rent a car and go to your chosen accommodation.
When you arrive, depending on your budget and tastes you will have a vast choice of accommodation, from private housing to hotels. Hotels are of course more expensive so often times visitors opt for private apartments. These are much more affordable and still very lux! And if you want to get a great deal find housing in one of the smaller towns with less tourism. Montenegro is small enough for you to get around, sight see and enjoy yourself without a problem, this way once you are in the housing you will have more privacy, peace and money saved so you can enjoy other things. For instance, a place like Saki Apartments, in Budva is absolutely gorgeous, the view and all, but it costs only 12-20 Euros depending on the apartment and the date of your visit.
Places that you definitely don't want to miss:
- Budva the tourist capitol of Montenegro. Tour throughout this wonderful city and make sure to check out the Music Festival if you are there during the summer. Also, make sure not to miss out the Old Town, in the summer months it becomes a theatre with open stages on the beaches, squares and church entrances.
- Kotor. Go here for the towns cultural value, it has been wonderfully preserved. The beaches, however are not nice and sandy. They are quite stoney so unless that floats your boat skip swimming here.
Some other cities worth visiting are Bar, Ulcinj, Tivat, Herceg Novi and Cetinje. They are all full of great tourist attractions and quite busy, so once you've gotten that out of your system you might want to go somewhere more private to enjoy the natural beauty of this country. In case you cant find a beach to your taste you could always rent one of many boats and go exploring one of the local islands. Lately this seems to be getting more and more popular, as the level of tourism rises in Montenegro many people wish to seclude themselves for a day or two so they rent a boat and go to one of the neighbouring islands.
