the National Symphony is performing from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. The U.S. Army Presidential Salute Battery shoots off live cannons while the 1812 overture is playing.

These events are prefaced by the performances of various bands and entertainers. The concert by the National Symphony accompanied by fireworks and the military cannons is quite a spectacle, tying our nation's Independence together with some of the special ways by which Americans celebrate. Fireworks begin at 9:20 p.m. EDT and they will be broadcast live on PBS stations.

There is something really special about watching fireworks that are shot off over the National Mall as the Washington monument stands tall at the west end of the mall. Perhaps the feeling of being amidst all of the history and governmental pomp and circumstance makes the fireworks in Washington D.C. a truly special and memorable experience.

*BOSTON -

Boston's fireworks display is orchestrated in conjunction with a concert by the Boston Pops Orchestra. The concert begins with a performance of the National Anthem and a simultaneous flyover by the 104th Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts National Guard, one of the oldest flying units within the Commonwealth.

During a performance of the 1812 overture, the 101st Artillery Regiment from the 1st Battalion will shoot off cannons. Fireworks will be shot off over the Charles River as music and fireworks combine to create a show unlike that of other cities. CBS television will broadcast the fireworks and concert live starting at 10:00 p.m. EDT. The history associated with Boston's fireworks makes it a pretty spectacular site. The fireworks are visible almost anywhere along the Charles River. The Boston Pops is an orchestra that tries to appeal to everyone.

*PHILADELPHIA -

It is quite appropriate that Philadelphia have one of the biggest and best fireworks displays in the country, for much of our country's early history and foundation was laid in the city of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. With it's own taste of Philadelphia, a three day celebration that leads up a four day celebration culminating in the 4th of July spectacular, beginning at sundown with "the biggest and most spectacular free outdoor concert in America" followed by a spectacular fireworks display. There is something incredible about watching the fireworks in the city in which the Declaration of Independence was signed.

There are many cities in America that have outstanding fireworks displays. Boston, Philadelphia and Washington are significant because of their importance in our country's history and struggle for Independence. Chicago is noteworthy because of the scope of the event, as it is tied in with one of the biggest summertime festivals in the Midwest. New York is significant because as the largest city in the United States, the fireworks are shot off from three places, making it, no doubt, the largest display in the country. The reason that the East Coast is so heavily represented is because that is where this country's struggle for independence began.
