Tips to cut household expenses

In an era of financial concerns and economic strains, everyone is looking for ways to save a dime and stretch a dollar. There are that you can cut expenses around your home in order to keep some green in your wallet.

1. Reduce your electricity and gas consumption

Today's consumer relies so much on electricity and gas to stay comfortable. In the winter months, thermostats are set high to stay warm. In the summer, air conditioners may run constantly from the first warm day that produces a slight amount of perspiration. Changing the way you use electricity or gas to manage the temperature in your home could save you quite a bit of money.

In winter months, set your thermostat lower and stay warm by using blankets. Wearing warmer clothing can also keep you warm without relying so much on energy consumption.

To stay cool in the summer months, you can manipulate the flow of air through your home by opening or closing certain windows. Paying attention to the breeze, even if slight, and opening windows that will allow the air to flow into your home will help to produce a cool atmosphere.

Your curtains or blinds can also be used as tools to cool your home. Pay attention to when the sun shines in your windows. Closing the blinds or curtains at the particular time when the sun shines directly in will reduce the amount of heat that radiates into your home.

Turn off your lights when you are not in the room. While it is easy to leave a room with the lights on and not think about it, this wastes electricity.

Appliances that are plugged in do still use electricity even if they are turned off. Computers are one such electrical machine that uses more electricity than you may realize in the off position. Similar to lights, when you are not using these items, unplug them and completely remove their energy source from adding pennies to your utility bill.

2. Reduce your water consumption

It is not uncommon for water to be wasted when doing simple tasks such as washing dishes or brushing your teeth. When brushing your teeth, for example, turn off the water when you are actually brushing. Turn the water on to rinse the toothbrush.

Another way to reduce water consumption is to take shorter showers. While it is easy to lose track of time standing in a steamy shower, your utility bill is still adding up on the excess running water. You can also use a timer to help you get in and out sooner.
