As a chronic insomniac for most of the last thirty years, there are certain things that have become aware to me, certain techniques that are easy to do to create a sleeping regimen. This sleeping regimen, this pattern of rest is critical in order to make your own gifts of sleep arrive.
First, of course, is your sleeping chamber or location. I've known some people to get much better sleep out of their easy chair, than their bed. I've known some people to sleep in satin sheets, or cotton. The trick here is to make that environment as enjoyable as possible.
Second, is yourself. Do you sleep in shorts, pajamas, or Au natural? Take the time to figure out what you're most comfortable in. There are many people who like to take a hot bath before bedtime to warm the muscles.
Third, look at the pattern of behavior that you're creating during the time prior to sleep. Oftentimes I will light a stick of incense, because I have cued my mind that lighting that incense will cause my subconscious to realize it is time to rest now.
Fourth, consider what you've done physically during the day to tire yourself out. Exercise is very valuable in getting decent sleep. It's not recommended that you exercise directly before bed, because of all the adrenaline in your system at that point will keep you out.
Fifth, be aware of what you take in as far as food and drink. Large, carbohydrate meals laden meals may make you tired initially, but will put enough calories in your body where only a short nap may be possible. Caffeine intake must be carefully monitored and limited in order to avoid additional factors that will deny you the gift of sleep. Be aware of how your prescription meds work as well.
Time, at this point is critical. Many sleep disorders come into play when people try to sleep at different points in the twenty-four hour day than the rest of their household.
I work night shift as a rule, and don't retire for the day until about eleven am. This means I'm at odds with the rest of the household.
It means I've learned how to use things like earplugs, darkening my room, and using a fan to keep the heat of the day away from me. I try to rest at the same time point every day. It's critical that I do that, because if I disrupt that cycle, I won't be able to get any rest, and will have to be agitated and tired.
Sleep is a gift, one to be treasured; and these hints and tips have helped me a good deal over the years, and I hope they help you out as well.
