With the growth of business on the internet in recent years, it's important for any business to have a website. Even local businesses can benefit substantially from having a website. Just because you are local doesn't mean you should only advertise in the phone books and newspapers. The more ways that your customers can access information about your business, the more customers are likely to make purchases. A website is a great way to tell people about your business, even during hours when your business is not open.
Why have a website for a local business?
You should have a website because, chances are, and most of your customers own and use computers. Some may not trust or want services from businesses in distant locations, but that doesn't mean they might not search for a business like yours nearby. When looking for products or services locally, many people will search for the type of business as well as the area, such as "printing shops" + "Boston, MA." If you own such a shop and don't have a website, they may never learn about the existence of your business.
Even if you are listed in the phone book or have advertisements in the local newspapers, some customers may want to learn more about your business after hours or before you open. Your website is there to provide information on your products, services, and hours even when no one is there to answer the telephone. A website is open 24 hours a day, even if you don't sell products online. There is always the chance that when a customer decides that he or she needs services such as the ones you offer, those such companies probably have a website. When customers search for businesses online, you want your business to show up in their search results, or you will be losing potential customers. You should advertise in as many places as you can, and the internet is an important place to have information about your business, since it can be accessed easily by anyone.
How do you get started?
Many companies offer web design services for small businesses. There are templates and software packages out there to make your own, but this is probably not a good option unless you already know a fair amount about web design. Remember that your website is there to represent your business in the same way as brochure printing or poster printing would; so if it is poorly designed, it reflects badly on your business. It is worth investing some money in having a well-designed website to attract customers.
What information should a website provide?
A website for a local business should tell customers where you are located, what hours you do business, and exactly what products and services you offer. Space is not limited on a website in the way that it is in a printed brochure or catalog, so you can link them to many photos and descriptions of your products if you wish. You should tell customers the best way to contact you, whether in person or by telephone or email, and include a phone number.
