When touring Washington, D.C., there are some national monuments and memorial parks that should be included in your itinerary. There are some that often get passed by, either because they are unknown or the trip planner doesn't think they are worthy of the time. Here is a list of those often-missed gems of this incredible city, as well as some of the more famous sights, places to stay that are close to your tour, and some unconventional tour options.

Possibly the most famous national park in the country, the National Mall and Memorial Park is home to some of our country's most renowned icons such as the Washington Monument; Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, and FDR memorials; and the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Veterans memorials. It is undoubtedly the most popular destination for D.C. visitors. Night is, for most, the most breathtaking time to visit, when the white stone structures are dramatically lit and the crowds are much smaller.

Another popular sight to add to your itinerary is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, otherwise known as America's Catholic Church, the largest Roman Catholic Church in all of North America and one of the tenth largest in the world. Located at 400 Michigan Avenue, it is easily accessed by car, foot, or the Red Line of the Metro-rail. There are several types of tours including self-guided and group. There is no fee for these tours.

Lodging that is centrally located to this area of town can be found, for a price, at the Hay Adams across from the White House, located at 800 16th Street. With rooms starting at $349 this is the cream of the local hotel crop. Fantastic views, luxurious accommodations, and a friendly and helpful staff complement the Hay Adams. There is also a concierge available to assist with all of your planning needs.

If the Hay Adams is a bit too pricey, there is the much more affordable and still conveniently located lodging at the District Hotel, 1440 Rhode Island Avenue, a short walk from all things touristy as well as some fine nightlife hot spots. With rooms starting at $79 a night, the District provides affordable and convenient accommodations without giving up cleanliness and service. It is situated in a relatively safe neighborhood, so walking to and from the different sights is not a problem.

For a look into the world of the Freemasons and their influence on the founding of our nation and its capital, there is a fairly new tour available from E-Square, LLC. The Hidden Masonic Secrets of Washington D.C. Revealed
