Poetry: Insomnia

by Charlene Thomas

Created on: July 02, 2009

The television is watching me again

I am too tired to think but too awake to sleep

I'd be better off turning into a coyote so that I can

Stand on the roof of my house and howl at the moon

I think that would be much more productive than

What I'm doing right now

Staring aimlessly at pictures, hearing sounds but not listening

I should be reading a book, reciting bible verses, saying a prayer

I should be singing a song, composing a symphony

Creating the next great invention

There has got to be a reason for my eyes to still be open

Everything is quiet except the thoughts in my brain

The left side trying to reason with the right side

The right side is saying, "Let's party! Let's dance the night away"

"Dance to the rhythms" of the thoughts, the thoughts

The thoughts marching through my head

I am too tired to focus on one solitary thought

Too awake to sleep

The television is watching me.

Again.
