Twitter is a micro-blogging networking site where all users have a limited space to post their messages, which must not exceed 140 characters.
Even though this limitation seems to prevent someone from posting long messages, the possibility to post links that will transport the people who have the curiosity to click them to your website or blog means that Twitter is a great promotional tool, which helps you increase your business exposure.
Thanks to the way Twitter is set up all users are obliged to see the messages of a few of the people they are following when they open their own page, exactly because the space each one has is very limited, which allows the exposure of many users at the same time to only one page.
Even if the people you are following are not following you, (which means that you cannot send them direct messages), you still can talk with them using Twellow, a message centre for all Twitter users. This means that you can enter into direct contact with the people that show interest in your business, and answer their questions.
There are many tools that you can use, and everyday a new one appears online for your use.
You can, for example, use Twit Seeker in order to find the professionals you need or your potential customers, depending on the keywords contained in their messages or on the keywords found in their biography.
You can also look for the most popular users and follow them through Twitter Grader, a tool that gives a grade to each Twitter user depending on the number of messages they post, and depending on their content. If you constantly post useful information and interesting observations, you will be rewarded with a high Twitter grade, which will help you get many followers who are looking for professionals in your area, since you'll be at the top of the list.
You may also use Twitter Later in order to post your messages at different times of the day, so that they may be read by all your followers, whenever they open their page.
Always keep in mind that in order to get more followers and to be able to transmit your messages to more people, you have to be cautious with your postings. Even though the site's default question is "What are you doing?" this doesn't mean that you should report all your daily activities.
Many people never mention anything about their daily lives, and you had better follow their example if you are using Twitter as a business tool, even though sometimes you should
