When I found out I was pregnant I was obsessed with being completely prepared for my little one. I read the "What to Expect" books cover to cover and made my shopping list. I saw the Diaper Genie in the store and I thought that I would completely set with this product. I would have to worry about the smell of diapers and it would be convenient right next to my changing table.
There are three different types of Playtex Diaper Genies. The Diaper Genie II Elite System is number one in odor control according to their website. This model offers a hands free disposal of the diaper with the foot pedal, so you can be holding your baby and dispose of the diaper at the same time. The plastic also is made to eliminates odor causing bacteria. It seals in two ways and has a tough odor free bag. It can hold more than 30 small diapers before it needs to be changed. The Diaper Genie II System is a little different when it comes to it's features. It requires one hand to dispose of a diaper, because you have to push the diaper through the Push-N-Lock clamp. This design also holds more than 30 small diapers. The Diaper Genie Twistaway is also a little different. You have to open the lid, push down the diaper, close the lid, turn the twist cap three times and your done. This system is smaller and doesn't hold as many diapers.
I decided to go for the Diaper Genie II Elite System, since I knew I would be changing a lot of diapers and I didn't want the smell to linger in my baby's room. Now that my baby is at three months old, it fills up faster than I imagined it would when I bought it. I assumed it would fill like a normal garbage can of it's size, but the bag inside doesn't get as big at the can. The seal make the pail smaller inside. I have to empty it almost everyday. When it says 30 small diapers, it means when they're newborns.
I still like that it keeps the odors out, but I'm sure I could find a good garbage can for $40 and not have to empty it as much. You have to remember that the refills for the bags are going to cost you money as well. The refill says it should last you 180 diapers, so that is only six bags for your 30 small diapers. One package of three refill packs is $16.99 at Target, which is 18 bags, but for two more bags you could get Glad Odor Shield Tall Kitchen bags for about $6. These bags would also hold 13 gallons, which is much more than the Diaper Genie bags.
If you have a dumpster and don't mind spending more to buy bags, then the Diaper Genie is for you. However, if your garbage man only comes on a certain day and you're tight on money don't waste it on the Diaper Genie. You can get a good garbage can that does a good enough job.
