Finding people on Twitter to follow is very easy. By searching for your interests, using third party applications and a little of your own digging, you will be able to find many friends and followers on Twitter.

When you first create your Twitter account, Twitter will recommend several people for you to follow. There will be celebrities and other popular people on that list. If you wish to follow any of these recommendations, click the "Follow" button on their profile.

Finding People by Searching

After you have gone through Twitter's recommendations, begin searching for people with the same interests as you. On your Twitter profile page, click on "Find People". You can then search for names, usernames, companies, interests or other key words to find the people you are looking for.

Additionally, you can search through Twitter using hashtags (i.e. #hashtag). Hashtags are used to allow news agencies to identify specific tweets. You can use these hashtags to your advantage too.

If you are a writer, you may search for #writing, #write, #writer, #writechat, #writegoal, #seo. You do not have to use hashtags in your searches. Twitter will find all the mentions of "writer" as it will "#writer" the neat part is the hashtags are clickable URL's that will perform another search for you quickly. Click on the people with those hashtags in their tweets, look at their profile. If you share the same interests, follow them!

For instance, if you search for #writer, and 100 tweets come up with the hashtag #writer in them. Then you notice there are hashtags for #author, #book, #article, #seo within the various tweets. By simply clicking on them, you can perform another search instantaneously. If you are a writer for Helium, search for #helium and you will find many of the Helium contributors are already tweeting!

Look at Who Your Friends are Following

After you have accumulated a few friends on Twitter, you can look to see who they are following and who is following them. If you are a writer, and you have made friends with a few other writers, you can look to see who they are following. If they are writers for Helium, they will probably be following @HeliumWriter (Helium's official Twitter profile). Now go look and see who is following @HeliumWriter. Many people with the same interests as you will be following them.
