It's important to buy a case for your iPod so that when you throw it on the ground, upset at the junk song you bought on iTunes, it won't break in to a million pieces. Seriously, what other reason could there be to buy a case for your iPod?
Other than protection, there actually is one other reason to buy a case for your iPod. Style. In fact, the iPod is really all about style anyhow. It's not the best MP3 player out there. It's not the cheapest. It certainly doesn't have the most features. But it does have that "hip" factor - that "I'm cooler than you because you have a Microsoft Zune and only dweebs and idiots have those".
There are as many types of covers and protectors for an iPod as there are stars in the sky. You can get them in every color, pattern, and material you can imagine.
Popular materials used for iPod protectors include leather, silicon, vinyl, hard plastic, and neoprene. All have advantages and disadvantages. Leather is expensive, yet durable and stylish. Don't get it wet though - although that's good advice with any electronics.
Silicon is a soft plastic-like material. It's cheap and durable, but it can rip, and generally doesn't come in patterns - mostly only solid colors.
Hard plastic cases provide the most protection for your iPod, but they add size to the player. They can be bulky and can sometimes hide the controls, making it hard to skip past that junky Brittany Spears song your brother put on your iPod as a torture device. But if you absolutely, positively must protect your iPod, a hard plastic case is your best bet.
The last major category of case and protector for your iPod is a neoprene case. These are soft cases that are sort of squishy. They stretch and come in a million different colors and patterns. They offer a good amount of protection, and are commonly used by athletes in a gym or while running. Neoprene doesn't really weigh anything - which is nice.
Buying a protective case for your iPod is not absolutely essential, but it can be a good idea. The case will cost very little relative to the cost of the overpriced hardware. Let's face it - iPods aren't cheap. You don't want to have to be replacing it every time your dog knocks it off the coffee table when it's lunging for that donut you left out.
The best way to pick a case for your iPod is to go to your local electronics store and browse around a little. Pick one that fits your style. Just stay away from the "Hello Kitty" ones - ugh.
