Camping in the great outdoors is the perfect recreational activity to help shed away the stress of traditional urban living. Nothing is more profound or romantic than spending a night basking under a cloudless blanket of stars. But where are the best camping locations in Western Canada? Western Canada is known for its sprawling valleys, lush forests and post-card perfect vistas and mountains, so deciding where to camp can be a truly difficult task. However, here is my top five choices and why!
1. Banff National Park
Camping season kicks off in Banff around the beginning of April, and runs typically until October or late fall. Banff is probably one of the busiest camp locations in Canada, and it doesn't take long to understand why. If you could picture a magnificent landscape of lush green forests, crystal blue lakes and streams, with a jaw-dropping vista of sculpted ice capped mountains, than you may already know Banff. You can choose from over 13 different campgrounds, and 2,468 individual sites, accommodating all forms of camping from RV's to trailers to the true outdoorsman who chooses just a tent.
Now, Banff has several locations to choose from, and some require advanced reservations. Lake Louise is a particular location that is by far one of the most beautiful places on the planet. They do offer several campground locations, or you can even stay at one of the local resorts; although that isn't exactly camping now is it?
Protection Mountain offers over 89 sites, toilets, fire rings and even food storage areas. If you like hiking, and spend your afternoons observing a bevy of local wildlife, than this is a perfect spot. Again, surrounded by mountains and awe-inspiring vistas, you can't help yourself from falling in love with Protection Mountain. Almost 50km outside of Banff, the park can be found on the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A).
Mosquito Creek is another great campground in Banff National Park, situated only 24 km north of Lakelouise, along Highway 93 north. Overlooking a panoramic valley, which sits nestled under the majestic cliffs of Mount Hector, Mosquito Creek offers all major amenities, 32 sites to choose from, and an all year round camping experience. This location offers a great assortment of hiking trails and great fishing spots, but is a little more secluded compared to the more populated campsites.
2. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
Located on a thin strip of land along the southwestern shore of Vancouver Island, Pacific
