Shop accessories every woodworker needs

Every woodworker needs the basic workshop accessories every bit as much as they need the power tools, gizmos and gadgets. These are the stock items which are used on an almost daily basis and without them a woodworking shop would be incomplete. These are the ideal items for a woodworker to buy as they will serve the woodworker for years. Although many are not expensive, it is worthwhile stocking up with them, as during the course of a woodworking career, the carpenter is sure to need them. This article splits the accessories into different types, as this makes more sense to the reader, and they are able to gage their need from the information given and the type of activities they foresee undertaking.

For Marking Out your Wood.

One of the most important accessories you will need is a pencil sharpener or knife for sharpening a pencil. Without this you are hopelessly lost. Pencils come next, though these should be of sufficiently good carpentry quality to withstand constant use on a hard surface like wood. These are vital to marking out. You will also need a rubber, since often the marks you make on wooden items will need to be rubbed off during the course of construction.

For Measuring.

A sliding bevel is a tool which measures depth. This is used on a day to day basis for marking out angles and joints. This adjustable tool is so valuable to workshop practice that you will be lost without having one. A metal ruler is also valuable in the workshop environment, as are set squares and geometry tools. These help you to work out your designs and to measure things accurately. Buy a good quality measuring tape, and if you work with longer items sometimes, buy one which covers day to day measurement, and one which provides extra length. These are useful for measuring large planks of timber. A spirit level is essential when measuring the level of items while you work.

For finishing items.

You will always need to ensure that you have a good stock of different grades of sandpaper. Having wire wool is also very useful as this helps to produce a great finish on items you make, but is also vital to the upkeep of saw tables etc. Finishing includes dusting down ready for varnish, etc. Be sure to have a good quality dust brush available and plenty of tack
