Why are people afraid of haircuts?

When people are afraid of haircuts, it is more likely that they are actually afraid of bad haircuts.

Most people have experienced a bad haircut at some point in their life and often it is not an experience that one would want to repeat. Yet it can be difficult to find and stay with a good stylist. Stylists sometimes unexpectedly change salons, or you may move and need to find a new stylist. Too often asking friend's for referrals leads to horror stories or lukewarm reviews of salons with hit or miss results.

What is it that make bad haircuts so traumatizing?

1. Bad Haircuts Can Look Truly Awful

Hair styles make a strong visual impact and can greatly affect a person's overall appearance. This means that a bad haircut can make more than your hair look bad. A bad haircut may draw attention to your worst facial features. It may make your hair hard to control and, in some cases, it may be difficult to disguise a bad haircut.

2. Bad Haircuts Take a Long Time to Grow Out

Even people who have fast growing hair only grow about one-half inch each month. If there are multiple layers and lengths you may have to periodically have a stylist reshape your hair while it is growing out. The process of completely growing out a bad haircut can take many months.

3. Bad Haircuts are a Betrayal of Trust

When you let a stylist cut your hair, you are trusting that he will make you look good. You trust that a stylist knows what he is doing and can deliver the promised style. Too often that is not the case and it may leave you feeling angry, betrayed, embarrassed, and helpless.

4. Bad Haircuts Affect your Confidence

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but a bad haircut can have a significantly negative impact on a person's self-image. A bad haircut can make a person feel self-conscious and embarrassed to socialize or even leave the house. In turn, your self-image affects your performance at work and your enjoyment during social situations.

5. Bad Haircuts are in Plain View

It's hard to stop thinking about a bad haircut when you see it every time you pass a mirror or other reflective surface. It stares back at you from the bathroom mirror when you brush your teeth or wash your hands. It shows up in mirrored elevators or in the reflection of someone else's sunglasses.

6. Bad Haircuts may be Photographed

It's bad enough to walk through life with a bad haircut, but at least you can tell yourself it is temporary. Until someone pulls out a camera. If your bad haircut happens to have occurred at a time when you need to have school pictures or company photos taken, attend a wedding or other event, or have your driver's license renewed, you will be stuck looking at that bad haircut for years to come.
