Video game reviews: RIP Trilogy (PC)

The RIP Trilogy is a series of games that are a throwback to the arcade games of old and I've heard that the series is pretty similar to a game called Smash TV. So, what do most arcade games have in common? They're pretty simplistic games that people can enjoy playing as long as they don't have to pay a lot of money. They're good for playing every so often when you want something to do for like twenty to thirty minutes.

It's a shame more games aren't made like the RIP Trilogy and it's also a shame most of the games released by small-time developers and publishers don't get noticed much, if at all. While this series of game won't woo anyone with the graphics on display, they do what they set out to do very well which is provide you with simplistic gameplay that's challenging and addictive as you blast your way through wave after wave of enemy throughout the many levels.

RIP:

This is the first game of the trilogy. The gameplay in this title is the most basic really. You can't even move your character, though you can rotate the turret and use the mouse to grab powerups and shoot enemies. You have a cursor so that you can see where you're aiming.

In addition to the simplistic gameplay, there are three characters available to choose from and they each have different abilities. That might sound odd, but I'll explain it. When you kill enemies, your character earns experience points like in roleplaying games. Once they level up, a choice of three randomly generated perks pops up. You can only choose one and this allows you to tailor your character and also helps individualise the different characters.

RIP 2 Strike Back:

The game is bigger than the first one and it features one key improvement that helps make it much better. The improvement is the ability to move your character around the levels. The same three characters return as well: Halloween, Death and Rock N Roll. There are also more weapons and vehicles can be used. In addition, when the characters level up, you get to see a portrait of them displaying the items/perks they've earned which is rather nice even though it's only cosmetic on that screen and the items cannot be seen on the in-game character graphic. There are also some boss levels.

RIP 3 The Last Hero:

The game is again bigger than the last one and it even features a skill tree to progress down now instead of characters earning random perks. The biggest change though is the addition of three playable characters giving you a total of six characters to choose from. Again, they each have different abilities.

Overall:

The series is recommended for people who just want to play a game for like twenty minutes where they just blast away enemies.
