Video game reviews: RIP 3 - The Last Hero (PC)

The developers and publishers with a lot of money (or the ones that are well known) get all of the attention and have their games bought. Meanwhile, the small-time developers and publishers struggle to get said attention and it's a shame when you consider the fact that it's mostly the small-time companies who try to bring innovative concepts to the table or at least just focus on the actual gameplay of a title rather than trying to cover it up with flashy graphics.

The first RIP title was very simplistic and you couldn't even move your character in the game. RIP 2 Strike Back fixed that and improved on the basic foundations that were laid down. Now then, the third game again improves on everything with one exception which will be explained further down.

Meridian4 is the publisher and a company called Elephant Games is the developer. They are both small time companies that are perhaps unheard of. It's a shame really because while this game is nowhere near the best game ever released, it does actually do what it set out to do well and that is provide many levels jam packed with action and explosions everywhere. The ultimate goal is to provide a shooter experience that harkens back to the arcade days of old and if you've played Smash TV, I've heard it's pretty similar to that game. It achieves everything it sets out to do very well.

Now, as mentioned, the original game featured simplistic gameplay as your character was attached to a turret and he couldn't move, while he blasted away wave after wave of enemy. There were also three characters to choose from: Halloween, Death and Rock N Roll. The second game allowed you to move while keeping the same characters. The third title improves on the second in practically every way with it being bigger.

In the previous games, your character levelled up and could choose one perk of a choice of three that are randomly generated. In this game, characters still level up but there's an actual skill tree present now which is nice. However, the character protrait displaying the perks is gone which is a bit dissapointing though it added nothing to the gameplay. It was just fun seeing your character decked out in the items you've chosen as rewards.

With the gameplay quite similar to the others in the series, the biggest change comes about due to there now being three extra characters to control which is pretty nice and again, they each have different abilities.

The title is the best in the series but it is short and can be difficult. So, don't buy it expecting great graphics or anything more than a short, challenging game.
